The Advance Directive for Health Care or “Living Will” is the third of the essential documents. This document will appoint a “health care representative” in the event you are unable to communicate with your physicians. Such a health care representative will determine your course of treatment in the event you are unable to do so. The course of treatment can also include the removal of life-sustaining measures such as surgery, ventilators, and other mechanical means of continuing to keep your body functioning. Not having an advance directive for health care will require a court proceeding to make your medical decisions if you are unable to make these decisions. These proceedings can cause your family to incur large costs.
